A database is an organized collection of information or data. It is typically stored electronically in a computer system. A database is usually controlled by a database management system (DBMS). Together, the data and the DBMS, and the applications associated in a system, are recognized as a database system, or simply as database.

Evolution of the database

Databases evolved dramatically since their introduction in the early 1960s. Navigational databases as the hierarchical database and the network database (a more flexible model that allowed multiple relationships) were the original systems used to store and manipulate data. However, these early systems were inflexible. Consequently, in the 1980s, relational databases became popular; then, by object- oriented databases appeared in the 1990s. After that, more recently, NoSQL databases were introduced as a response to the growth of the internet and the need for faster speed and for processing of unstructured data. Today, cloud databases and self-driving databases are introduced in new fields, and they are transforming how data is collected, stored, managed, and used.
