Statement of the Problem: 1. What are the mental effects of listening to OPM during the pandemic for grades 9-12 students of SEC? 2. How do grades 9-12 students of SEC perceive OPM during the pandemic?

Statement of the Problem

OPM

Music is a kind of art that many people take pleasure and entertainment from. Be it when you are bored, feel lonely, or even in the moment. These feelings are felt mostly in today’s time. Either nothing happens or something big occurs while everything else may seem plain or for some. Music can be used to set the mood for a certain situation. In our case, OPM is the jack of all trades. OPM is said to bring out powerful emotions from deep inside. Filipinos call this feeling “Hugot” which can be found in almost every OPM love song. This feeling can first be discovered once one reaches highschool in which they find their “First Love”. High School students chase this feeling and most achieve it just by listening to OPM. Back in the early 2000’s, OPM was still moving behind the shadow of Western Music.

Significance of the Study: The Filipino composers and the highschool students who listen to OPM are the ones who'll be benefiting in this research. This research will give you a brief idea of what are the effects of OPM in grades 9-12 at Southeastern College. This research will also show you how we can motivate and engage Filipino song composers to write more songs for the Filipinos. The intent of this research is to give you a brief explanation of what are the mental effects of listening to OPM in the midst of a pandemic to grades 9-12 students of Southeastern College. This research also intends to boost Filipino song composers' confidence and to motivate and inspire them to continue writing music for the Filipinos and that would contribute to the culture of our country.

Introduction

Original Pilipino Music, now more commonly known as Original Pinoy Music, Original Philippine Music or OPM for short, originally referred to Philippine pop songs, particularly ballads, that were popular in the Philippines during the late 70s to the present. OPM artists such as Rico Puno Jr., Ryan Cayabyab, and Celeste Legaspi in the 70’s, and Regine Velasquez, Sharon Cuneta, Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandes, among many others led the way in the 80’s and 90s. Marky Enriquez (2019). As vague as this may seem, this is all that it takes to define OPM. OPM is literally Original Philippine Music. As stated “popular in the Philippines during the late 70s to the present” is also evident as more and more composers rise in today’s time. The Filipino’s ability to create something unique from so many cultural influences is surely something to celebrate. De Guzman captures this perfectly - this diversity in musical styles, subjects and traditions reflects the many facets of our musical heritage. It also speaks of the vibrancy of our culture..” This surely means that OPM is far from unoriginal. Angelli Greenslade (2020)

Music Therapy Music can have profound effects on our physical and psychological well-being. Researchers have discovered it can lessen pain, reduce depression, and decrease anxiety. This is why music therapy is often used as a strategy to treat a variety of physical, emotional, cognitive, and social issues. (Amy Morin, 2022). I'm sure there are a lot of people who agree that music can be used for many situations for it gives many benefits. 79% of the readers of this source used music to cope during the pandemic and the majority of the readers used music to cheer up. Music Psychology Music can help your brain get into a meditative state, which carries wonderful stress relief benefits with it. For those who find meditation intimidating, listening to music can be an easier alternative. Music is easy for kids to enjoy, too, so while meditation may be challenging to teach to your kids, putting on the right music can be a way to ease them into a more meditative state without their completely realizing it. (Elizabeth Scott, 2020). Music hits differently when kids or teens are the ones listening. They tend to really feel the music they are listening to. Kids these days describe good songs as a “Vibe”. Music is very flexible when it comes to various situations. One of these situations is for when you want to focus on doing something. Preferably work.

Introduction

In this research, we will be conducting a survey to grades 9-12 students at Southeastern College by using Quantitative Research for us to determine their perspectives regarding the effects of OPM.

Research Design

OPM

Researchers will first seek approval from the subject teacher before conducting surveys for the said research. Researchers will then seek the approval of each class adviser ahead of time before starting the making of the survey form. Researchers then will ensure that each question and the entirety of the Form is focused on grades 9-12 and must also ensure that every participant’s identity will be kept anonymous for privacy purposes. After collection of data, researchers will use given information to analyze pros and cons of OPM in the midst of the pandemic.
