TO GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW DISNEY ARE WORKING TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE.
implicit bias
in walt disney company films
EPQ PRESENTATION: An investigation into the extent of
My three posed questions/ideas were: -The cultural diaspora of mixed race children. -How racial segregation in cities enforces poverty, and prevents upward mobility. -Does the portrayal of villains in the film industry further unconscious bias?
When I first started brainstorming for my EP, the possibilities were endless! There was nothing that I couldn't do!
There were three initial ideas that I wanted to persue.
initial ideas
This topic captivated my attention. I could combine childhood nostalgia with my interest in social and cultural issues, without risking dual accredition...
I was first introduced to the topic of representation during a late night internet browsing session when i stumbled upon a youtube video titled "Howcartoons brainwashed us with Jewish stereotypes"
Inspiration
FINAL TITLE: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE EXTENT OF IMPLICIT BIAS IN WALT DISNEY COMPANY FILMS, TO GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THEY ARE WORKING TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE
Working title: An investigation into implicit bias in childrens film and how companies are working to challenge this
INitial title: Does the presentation of villains further unconscious bias
title development
The quest to find useful resources was initially extremely difficult. That was until I found The MDPI Social Sciences journal, titled "The Psychosocial Implications of Disney Movies" This journal operated as a springboard, allowing me to follow any reference from any of the useful articles. I eventually had a wide database of resources to use my project.
Although, I soon learnt that an article/ journal is never what it appears to be at face value- one article in particular, which I had previously dismissed due to their publication company, turned out to be extremely reliable and useful!

walt disney's Cinderella
“Just because it's what's done, doesn't mean it's what should be done”
vs
remaining impartial to risk dual accredtation
balancing the project with other courseworks
severely underestimated how long the project would take
learnt how to plan and manage my time
Developed my understanding of researching
Learnt how to structure, reference and evaluate sources
successes & challenges
After I had a skeleton draft, I found an article on Disney's female gender roles, enabling me to view my hypothesis through a gender scope.
How my research impacted my project
At first I struggled to find adequate research of substance, so I had to base my initial plan around a small amount of articles. After my initial draft was underway, I begun to acknowledge how the ideas were flowing and working together.
Other depictions
How this enforces implicit bias
Disney's Global Reach
Evolution of cultural depictions
How I structured my ideas to answer my hypothesis.
project Summary
What would I do differently.
If I were to retake the extended project on my own time, I would have started the project months before, aiming to return to school after the summer break with all research and an evidenced plan.
