the importance of marriage
at the turn of the 19th century
““It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.””
Marriage in the 19th century
I ask only a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Collin's character, connection, and statue in life, I am convinced that my chance of happiness with him is as fair as most people can boast on entering the marriagee state -Charlotte Lucas
The laws in Britain were based on the idea that women would get married and that their husbands would take care of them. Therefore when a woman got married her wealth was passed to her husband. Also, if she worked after marriage, her earnings also belonged to her husband. The idea was that upper and middle class women had to stay dependent on a man: first as a daughter and later as a wife.
In the early 19th century the role of women was different. In Britain, the roles of women in society were predominately as cook, wife, mother in a mainly rural settinn. Unmarried women were considered as burden to their families and the shame of society. As they could not perform none of the roles that society assigned to them. Marriage was a working partnership, and families were the basis of many businesses. Marriage was seen to encourage social stability and moral behaviour, and allowed secure transfer of property within a family. To sum up, it's not strange that marriage was so important. In this era women were raised to be wives and mothers. That was the only purpose of their lives and in order to achieve it they needed to get married. Furthermore, a woman working was reprehensible. So, she needed a rich husband to maintain her and their children. Finally, marrying someone belonging to the upper class increases one's prestige and that was a matter of utmost importance, especially in the early 19th century.
