Great potatoes famine

1845 to 1852, millions of Irish leave Ireland and many died of hunger. This is considered as the beginning of The Troubles because UK did nothing to help them (Ireland was a colony of UK)

War of Independence

Start in 1919 and stop in 1921. In this war the Irish Republican Army fought against the British security army. Finally, the Irish island split in two parts: Nothern Ireland stayed in UK, the rest became an independent country, it’s the born of the Republic of Ireland. Some people of the Nothern Ireland want to joined the independent country

Battles of Bogsides:

In 1969, riots started in Derry which lasted several days with violence, many people fought against the British Army

Bloody Sunday:

The 30th January 1972, during a gather in Derry (around 15 000 peoples), the British army shot 28 of them (14 died), they were unarmed and many were shot while helping the wounded. This event had a large mediatic cover and worsening the conflict.

Hunger strikes:

1st Marsh 1981, the hunger strike of irish prisoners starts with Boddy Sand as leader to made the British government accept them to war prisoners and not criminal

Brighton’s bombing:

12th October, bombing in the city hall of Brighton (England) in order to keep the life pf Margaret Thatcher, the first minister

Good Friday Agreement:

The10th April 1998, the Good Friday Agreement (because it’s was the Good Friday, also named the Belfast agreement was pronounce. It’s a peace deal between UK and the Republic of Ireland, it determine how Nothern Ireland will be governed. It put an end to the Troubles

The Brexit:

1st February 2020, the Brexit was voted, it fuelled the conflict between Irish people (republican and Catholics) and British people (loyalist and Protestants)
