The work at Avonmouth Port near Bristol involves 14m-high steel sheets being driven into the ground and earth banks built up.
Concrete walls and flood gates are also being constructed as part of a battle to protect 2,500 homes against rising sea levels.
As part of the work, 80 hectares of new wetlands for birds are being created.
This will be done by flooding land.

SEA LEVEL RISE IN THE U.K.

4 of 5

> Learn more

Sea level rise relative to the land is the combination of absolute sea level rise and vertical land movements.By 2100 relative sea level could have risen by as much as 80 cm around some parts of the UK coast .

Despite coastline management plans and adaptation measures, such as raising flood defences or managed retreat, the risks are not removed entirely and erosion has continued to exacerbate hazards like storm surges and landslides. Minimising damage and improving the safety of coastal communities is vitally important.
