Wu Zhao : February 17th 624, Lizhou - december 16th 705, Sanmenxia

Ruled 50 years old the Chinese empire
655-690, Tang dynasty / 690-705, Zhou Dynasty

Born in a wealthy family where she recieved a high education

> Really rare for women in old China to have an education

THE IMPERIAL PALACE

14 years old : become concubine of the emperor Taizong in the imperial palace

The Daming palace in Chang'an

> She continued her education there

649 : Taizong died and all his concubines are sent to the covent

Wu had other plans than become a nun : she became closer to Gaozong, the new chinese emperor, who fell in love with her

> He took her as consort ( second wife )

EMPRESS OF CHINA

When she was back to Daming palace : started to get influent towards Gaozong

> Wang was really jealous : numerous conflicts but Wu won them

Thanks to her strong personality : become more influent towards political decisions and won numerous allies who help her to eliminate rivals

660 : Gaozong became sick, Wu ruled the empire for him

When Gaozong died in 683, their son became emperor but he was too young to rule : Wu help him

690 : Wu take the power of his son and proclaim herself emperor and create a new dynasty : the Zhou of the south

HER IMPACT ON THE COUNTRY

Thanks to her leadership, her great ambition and her effective governance : Wu bring to China its most prosper century

She made the Empire of China the most powerful nation of that time thanks to all the wars who made China greatter and stronger

> expansion of Chinese boarders in Korea and central Asia

She made numerous reforms which developped the country :

  • Improved inhabitants' life conditions
  • Improved farming techniques
  • Building new public places ( developped culture and art )
  • Brought education to women
