Abraham Lincoln was born 12 February 1809 in Hardin County. His family was modest and he had an uneventful childhood.

Meeting with Abraham Lincoln

After years of working at home and at school, he decided to learn the law on his own and became a lawyer. In 1830 he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives and then to the United States House of Representatives. The country had been going through a period of great tension over slavery for several years, and Lincoln decided to oppose it. Following a series of debates against Stephen A. Douglas on the subject of the extension of slavery, he became very popular around 1858.

-20 May 1862: Homestead Act signed by Abraham Lincoln.

-1 January 1863: slaves are emancipated.

-8 November 1864: Lincoln is re-elected to a second term with 56% of the popular vote.

-9 April 1865: Confederate surrender ending the Civil War.

-15 April 1865: President Lincoln is assassinated in Washington

Abraham Lincoln had to keep the peace but he had the war.

He was a very popular president but was assassinated shortly after being re-elected.

At the time, slaves were not allowed to have the same rights as white people, so Abraham Lincoln had to change things and ban slavery.

He was the first white president in the United States to consider that it should not be allowed to use black people to work for free.
