GEORGIA MURPHY

I want to make an impact on how the world experiences music. Music for me is a passion, a passion I want to pursue in later life. An internship with Spotify would be a dream come true, a chance to contribute my ideas and make a real difference. I want to make this application short and snappy, however there is so much I want to write that I have found it a challenge.

A WORD FROM THE ARTIST:

My passion for music stems from playing instruments themselves, I play the piano, trumpet, guitar and occasionally sing, these skills gave me the incredible opportunity to perform solo, in duets and in all kinds of bands. More recently I have developed an interest for DJing and want to go on to possibly help produce music. I listen to all kinds of music every day and have an extensive understanding of the music industry landscape and trends. Including listening to smaller artists and making it my mission to find new music and support new artists. Over the last year especially I have DJed as the headline at various club events and evolved a keen interest in the world of music and technology.

DISC 1-Music

DISC 1-Music

Alongside developing my music and tech skills I am studying human geography at Durham University. Delving deeper into the world of economic geography and urban geography. Georgaphy is an extremely topical subject that relates to almost everything in our surrounding world-Music included. Currently I'm working on an idea of geographies of music and mapping sound. Geography is also beneficial in understanding scale, something which is applicable to this internship, working with and understanding the interrelationships between artists and various teams at a local and global scale. Something I also worked on in the past was an Extended Project Qualification whereby I studied the most successful marketing campaigns, therefore I have a solid undertsanding on effective marketing campaigns. Geography overlaps with aspects of media, music and marketing and I believe my determination and passion for music and technology is extremely valuable.

DISC 2-Education

My relevant work experience includes directing the music for a charity fashion show, I have been responsible for selecting songs or samples and mixing them to get the perfect song for each walk, a process I have thoroughly enjoyed. I have enjoyed it so much that I have applied to be music director for Durham University Charity Fashion Show, which last year raised £205,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust. In addition, from September this year I am running a club event that happens every Wednesday, alongside 3 other people. Something that I have already started preparing for and have learnt various new skills in preparation for next year. Furthermore, I am also in the process of joining Purple Radio, a radio run entirely by Durham students, I am working towards getting my own show. Additionally, I think it is important to mention that I have worked in the hospitality sector for 5 years, so teamwork and working with others is something I really enjoy doing and I pride myself in my excellent ability to work effectively with almost anyone. Most recently, I have been working in a speakeasy cocktail bar and this has hugely developed my confidence and has been a welcomed challenge to develop skills that were alien to me before.

It would be an honour to work with the team at Spotify and I truly believe I would be an asset to the company, I have new ideas that I would love to get the chance to put forward and working with artists and labels is something I desire and look forward to.
