• Took part in attack of Moncada barracks that became known as 26th July movement (1953) , captured and held for 7 months
• Joined Sierra Maestra camp after release
• Founded Casa de las Americas (organisation that aimed to develop relations between countries in S. America and Caribbean) 4 months after revolution
• 1965 became 1 of 5 women in 100-member Central Committee of party
• 1976 became member of the Council of State
• Was serving as director of Cuba’s cultural centre and state publishing house at time of death
• Committed suicide



• She grew up in relative affluence, received good education, provided her with cover and connections for joining 26th of July movement
• Founder of movement in Manzanillo (1952), the first female guerilla of the Sierra Maestra
• Organised and planned the landing of the Granma and was in charge of revolutionary projects such as the “re-education” of the families of anti-Castro insurgents
• Later became secretary to the presidency of the Council of Ministers, worked in the Department of Services of the Council of State
• Revealed to Cuban society that women are capable of having jobs involving physical labour and could assume leadership roles
