Stereotyped images or not?

In the framework of the Erasmus+ programme, JULIET project - "Women Open to Modern European Nations" Portuguese and Italian students and teachers were involved in an exchange between 1 and 7 March in France, at the Collège Boris Vian, where they were welcomed by their French peers.

Juliet "Women Open to Modern European Nations

On the 1st DAY, totally devoted to the trip, the Italian team from the Giuseppe Pavoncelli middle school in Cerignola and the Portuguese one from Agrupamento de Escolas de Pombal in Pombal arrived late in the evening at the Collège in Coudekerque where their French families and pairs were waiting.

On the move

The 2nd Day started with the meeting in the College Hall after which the French, Portuguese and Italian students presented their country/ region, city and school through videos and power point presentations to their partners so that they could get to know and understand a little bit more of each one’s culture, traditions and history. After that it was time for the students to get involved in an icebreaking workshop to know each other, their tastes, similarities and differences. And because Carnival in Dunkirk is a particularly powerful and traditional festivity, nothing made more sense than a workshop to create Carnival hats. It was time for joy, creativity, pair work and cultural immersion.Meanwhile research about clothes and ornaments within the fashion evolution was taking place. At the end of the morning all students and teachers have displayed their magnificent, colourful and creative hats.

Under the title “Stereotyped Images or not?” the activities began!

Later, in the afternoon, all the participants went on a trip to visit the Museum of Lace and Fashion in Calais. During the guided tour the students had the opportunity to travel from ancient times to present days and immerse themselves in the industry and expertise that gave Calais its international reputation. The techniques, the machinery and the exhibitions allowed our students to understand the eternal dance between the past and the present as well as on the part played by women and children in industrialization focused on the gendered segregation of the work and the respective wages of men, women, and children. After the visit to this fascinating and surprising place we headed to Cap Blanc Nez. The walk ended up at the top of the cliff where students could admire not only the landscape but also the obelisk, a monument built to commemorate the Dover Patrol which kept the Channel free of German U-boats in World War I. Down below the platform where they stood students were able to see the WW II bunkers. Only the strong wind and the fog didn´t allow going down and walking on the beach. It was time to return to school and back home!

On the 3rd Day the activities about women’s rights and aspirations gave place to a reading time workshop. Students analysed quotes and sentences about women’s rights and interacted in small groups in order to write down meaningful and powerful statements about what they think are the rights and aspirations of women in today’s society. Though the situation of women is different from country to country all the participants agreed on the importance of working towards equality. Then, the students went to the playground where they the voice directing and staging was done.Afterwards each group explained the chosen statements, sharing with the others their ideas and reflections.

In the afternoon the participants were divided into two major groups in order to do activities related to the research of famous sportswomen and the practice of sports vs stereotypes. While one of the groups was doing the activity connected to famous sportswomen in which each pair chose a famous sportswoman, searched for relevant information and presented it to the other students, the other one was either out on the field playing football or in the gymnasium dancing. This way the objective was to make students understand and come to the same principle that every sport can be played by both girls and boys.

The morning of the 4th Day started with a workshop where students were asked to reflect upon the activities of the week. They had to express themselves in a creative way about the, their likes, motivations, learning and feelings they have experienced throughout the week.Colourful posters full of words displayed in various different and creative ways were shown at the end.Later, the whole group took a walk to “Studio du Hérisson” where the students could watch the film Parvana.Based closely on real life, the film presents the touching story of Parvana, a young girl growing up in Afghanistan, where the Taliban, members of an extreme religious group, rule most of the country with a heavy hand.It was time for our students to imagine living in a country where women and girls are not allowed to leave the house without a man, having to wear clothes that cover every part of your body, including their face, whenever they go out.The film raises important issues about the status and rights of females in that part of the world.“When the news overwhelms or covers events in parts of the world we are unfamiliar with, stories can.” This is why this film is so important.

After lunch the group was divided into two groups so that students could do the activities that would take place at Lycée Jean Bart and in the City alternatively. While group 1 was at the Lycée doing the Escape Game about Fictional female Characters to commemorate the International Women Day. The students had to scan the 17 QR codes scattered throughout the school. The race began in the school hall and took place on the ground floor and around the stadium. Each QR code gave the information the students needed to guess who the character was. Those finding out the identity of the 17 female characters won the game.Meanwhile group 2 was discovering the city of Dunkirk. A city full of history that would be learnt by the participants as they were listening to the explanations gave by the teachers and filling in the quiz about the places they were visiting.
