The place of Women
Women are shown in this video as objects to entertain men, to animate the speakeasy. They are employes of the bar : they are waitresses, dancers, singers, ... They are less numerous than men in this bar.
The atmosphere of speakeasy
The atmosphere in the speakeasy seems heavier and livelier than in the barber shop. The room is crowded, but also dark because it is in the underground. There is a lot of noise, people, alcohol and smoke. Many people are being kicked out because of violence caused by too much alcohol.
The effects of prohibition
Prohibition led to the creation of speakeasies and bootlegging. bootlegging intensified and brought violence, crime, and other violent actions caused by thealcohol. Prohibition did not help. In the video we see that a man is expelled because he is drunk. Moreover the worms in hands, and the bottles on the tables as well as the barman, allow us to understand that we are well in a speakeasy.
The people in the speakeasy are wealthy and upper class as you can see that they are all wearing suits with ties. Some of them even have a cane. Gatsby talks with a commissioner who is there as a customer. We also find in the bar bartenders, dancers, musicians, and men doing security. One of them is evicting a drunk man. All the people in this bar seem to know each other.
The people who attend the speakeasy
The first store the two friends enter is a barbershop reserved for wealthy men. The store in which the characters find themselves is airy, bright and calm. The customers look relaxed and serene, yet they all know that behind a picture on the wall is a speakeasy in the basement.
