HOW TO WRITE AN ABSTRACT
Adapted from
the Clarion University guide to writing an abstact

What is an abstract?

1

It is a very brief summary (= un résumé) of your paper. It should be about 150 words long / about 6 sentences.

What should I write in my abstract?

2

You should write one sentence for each of the following parts of the paper:
- Nature of the issue : quel est le thème + la problématique de votre article ?
- Methods : qu'est-ce qui a été mis en place pour répondre à la problématique ?
- Major results : quels sont les résultats les plus notables qui ont été obtenus ?

What makes a good abstract?

3

A good abstract should be:
- Very concise and specific: each sentence should be as brief as possible (no linking words, no words that are not absolutely necessary in the sentence).
- Accurate: do not add any information that is not in the paper.
- Neutral: do not state your opinion / comment on the findings (this is something you should do in the discussion section of the paper).

A few things to avoid

4

DO NOT:
-Use paragraphs / paragraph indentations (= des alinéas)
- Use abbreviations or acronyms that you have not defined.
- Quote (= citer) the rest of the research paper or other sources.

Good luck!
