Organ transplant

American scientists have managed to make a kidney of a pig work on a human.

This new medical advance represents immense hope for thousands of people waiting for a transplant .
The operation was successfully performed at NYU Langone Hospital in New York .

The kidney was connected to the blood vessels of a brain-dead patient.

The operation lasted two hours, and the kidney functioned perfectly throughout the duration of experiment.
There was no rapid rejection of the kindey, as the animal was genetically modified.

Why choose a pig , rather than another animal ?

In the past, early experiments focused on primates.

But the results were not satisfactory.
Notably in 1984 , a baboon's heart was transplanted into a baby who had only survived twenty days.

In the meantime , the use of genetically modified pigs is a very interesting sources of organs , both for kidney transplants and those of lungs or hearts.

From a medical point of view, this success is an exellent step forward , and it helps to give extremely strong hope to thousands of patients around the world .
