Kroje are folk costumes worn by Slovaks. Gothic influence is seen in tying shawls and kerchiefs on the head. Fine pleats and gathered lace collars typify the Renaissance era. From Baroque bell-shaped skirts to delicate Slavic patterns, these folk costumes show the complex growth of Slovak traditions.Kroje had many regional variants with typical decorations and/or colours. Every region has it own national costumesThere are three basic types of kroje: the simple one, used in everyday life that looks very similar in all regions. the celebration one, used for Sunday masses, feasts etc. - these are the decorative ones you often see on pictures. the wedding one - used only when you were a bride or a groom. As it was not reasonable to have a one-purpose clothing, it was often a celebration one upgraded by typical wedding accessories.Kroje are not worn by people in Slovakia anymore, only during feasts people use them as a living tradition.

Swallowing is one of the most characteristic customs of the first of March, the custom of school-age children going from home to home this morning holding a wooden swallow dummy and singing about the coming of spring and the return of swallows.

The swallow custom

1st Liti's Kindergarten

One of the most archaic customs that has survived to this day. It takes place at the end of winter and expresses the desire of people to end the cold weather and summon the warm rays of the sun. This custom has its roots in the pre-Christian period, when people believed that nature was controlled by supernatural forces whose actions could be influenced. They also attributed the alternation of the seasons to these forces.Morena symbolized winter, so if people wanted spring to come, they had to kill it, drown it in a stream, or burn it. It took the form of a straw mannequin dressed in women's clothes, worn by young girls singing to the creek. They stripped her by the shore, set her on fire and threw her into the waters of the rippling river. The most common date for taking Morena is Lent Sunday two weeks before Easter.

Kindergarten Iľjušinova, Slovakia

On Lazarus Saturday, children used to sing carols of Lazarus. On that day, they also used to bake sweet spiced breads, called "Lazarakia"They had a man's shape with his hands folded like dead Lazarus.

The Pelion wedding begins eight days before the Sunday of the sacrament. The wedding dress was not white like todays wedding dresses. Later, the floors are made, a custom according to which the groom and the Bratimia went to the bride's house and drank the leaven from which the wedding bun will be made. Of course the floor would not fall from the sieve if it were not silver plated. The same floor was bleached for the groom and the bride to whiten and age!

AXION ESTI Despoina's Class

Every New Year in Peloponnese people break the pomegranate inside their houses for good luck.
