START

Today's theme

Today, we're going to talk about global warming

First, let's start with some historical explanations:

  • related to the industrial activity
  • "anthropogenic": of human origin
  • IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)
  • "Svante Arrhenius" at the end of the 19th century
  • release large amount of carbon into the atmosphere
  • by burning coal, the air will charge in CO2 and retain more heat

=> The part of this energy that is not reflected by the atmosphere is absorbed by the Earth's surface wich warms up by absorbing it.

=> Part of this radiation is absorbed by certain gases and by clouds, this is the phenomenon of the greenhouse effect.

=> An increase in greenhouse gases as a result of human activities traps some of this radiation, wich causes surface temperatures to rise until a new equilibrium is found

And now, let's explain it in a more scientific way!

Some greenhouse gases...

CH4

SF6

N2O

CO2

Its lifetime in the atmosphere is more than a hundred years.

The lifetime of methane in the atmosphere is of the order of 12 years.

Its lifetime is about 120 years.

It has a lifespan of 50.000 years in the atmosphere.

+ info

-it will disrupts the seasons, affecting animals (food chain)

-there is an increase in natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, tornados and tsunamis...

-that will lead to the creation of millions of refugees.

-global warming causes drought that increase the risk of wild fire burning hectares of forest (like in Australia, for exemple).

-it also accelerate the melting of the ice, wich result in a rise of the sea level, wich will submerge a significant part of the Earth in a possible future.

What are the consequences then?
