Luck of the Titanic
2
The RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner and was operated by the White Star Line. It started its maiden voyage in Southampton, UK on April 10th, 1912, and its destination was New York City. The Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15th, 1912, after hitting an iceberg. When Valora Luck isn't let onto the ship due to being half Chinese, she finds her way on this voyage by passing herself off as her deceased boss, Mrs. Sloan. Valora isn't allowed clearance onto the Titanic by being herself due to the Chinese Exclusion Act. This meaning she would not have been allowed into America without documentation papers.
One of the items Valora Luck always has with her is her mother's Bible with a wedding photograph of her father and mother. When Valora is first denied access onto the Titanic she thought she had lost these items forever.
Valora Luck's plan after boarding the Titanic was to find her brother, perform as acrobats by the part owner of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Mr. Albert Ankeny Stewart, and then convince Stewart to help them both into America. One of the acts Valor first performed on the ship was juggling a pineapple, an apple and four bread heels.
A card game made up by Valora and her brother Jamie, "The Winds of Change". A number eight card being most important. Cards also show Valora throughout the book when she is about to be shown luck.
