SPORT and PROTEST

Look at this picture carefully . Describe it then make guesses from what you see: What is the situation?

To what extent can sportspeople make the world change?

The scene takes place in a stadium / an arena. Two sportsmen are kneeling down / taking a knee while the other athletes behind are standing. It is quite strange / unexpected / unusual. The other sportsmen are standing, placing their hands on their heart while listening to the national anthem as a sign of respect to their country. The two men kneeling down are Eric Reild and Colin Kaepernick may be protesting against something.

During a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks in summer 2016, Kaepernick sat down during the US national anthem, when usually, athletes stand proudly. In an interview after the game, he explained: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder." Here, on September 12, 2016, Kaepernick and Reid went a step futher by taking a knee before a NFL match.
