Hollow brick The walls of the building are hollow to allow heat to rise through them.
Smoke passage Heat and smoke passages in the wall were essential to stop a build up of smoke in the home. Smoke traveled vertically to be released through the roof's chimneys.
Transformed baths Ancient Romans are famous for their baths. While early Roman baths were heated by natural hot water springs, hypocausts were also used from the 1st century.
Furnace People were required to keep the wood burning in the furnace, releasing heat.
Chamber system Below the ground, brick pillars (called pilae) supported the building.
Heat circulation The gaps between the stacks of brick created passages for hot air to spread horizontally.
Comfortable homes This heating system could heat the air in the rooms above up to 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).
