NAME

The Gulf was named after ancient Ambracia, a city built on the Arachthos River, where the city of Arta is located today.

LOCATION

The Amvrakikos Gulf is the largest gulf of Western Greece and one of the largest closed gulfs of Greece. It is located between the Southern part of Epirus and northern Aitoloakarnania and it covers an area of about 400km.

CREATION

The Amvrakikos gulf is the result of intense tectonic activity that began over 2.000.000 years ago. It is a tectonic draft which began to fill with the deposits of two rivers, Louros and Arachthos. The gradual elevation of the Sea over the last 10.000 years has resulted in the Ionian Sea penetrating between Aktion and Preveza and flooding the bay giving it its present form.

Madonie Geopark

Known as ‘Nectar of the Gods’, the Sicilian Manna is a typical local product of the Italian island, with a characteristic sweet taste. Specifically, it is a crystallised lymph extracted from the trunks of Ash trees. Manna is harvested in the lands of Madonie, between Castelbuono and Pollina, a town on the Tyrrhenian coast of the island. Madonie's manna is a traditional endangered product. It is a food rich in sugars and with amazing properties.

Eco - Guide

Papuk is the most prominent of the Slavonian Mountains and shows exceptional geological diversity and complex evolution. Mount Papuk has a "stormy" geological history going as far back as the Precambrian with metamorphic rocks that date back as far as the Pre-Cambrian, more than 540 million years ago. More recent geological features result from mountain building with Mesozoic sediments 260 and 65 million years old, including carbonate rocks, mostly dolomites, numerous karst phenomena, like sinkholes, caves, speleothems, caverns, springs, etc, as well as the Cretaceous volcanic sedimentary complex of Rupnika which was protected as Croatia's first natural geological monument in 1948.

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve - Mura - Drava - Dunav

This activity was made in a partnership with state owned company Hrvatske šume (Croatian Forests). Every partner planted one tree and we marked them with the coat of arms of each partner country.

The Croatian Eco-club supervises it regularly. The last visit was on 14th July 2022. All trees are in good condition and healhty.

Trees were planted during Croatian mobility (hosting) on 17th March 2022. This sort of trees are a very traditional Croatian type of oak (Hrast kitnjak). They were planted in Mura - Drava Regional Park (part of the European Amazon)- UNESCO Reservoir of Biosphere.

The Lagoon is situated on the coast, south of Espinho! it is a real gem of natural diversity and a good example of preservation of a NATURA 2000 area. It is a flooding area near the sea and it's very important for its birds and plants, which are specific of the sandy areas near the coast. We developed several eco-actions during our visit to the Lagoon and its surroundings: bird-watching, a guided eco-tour and removing parasitic plants in our plogging bags activity.

This big eco-area inside the urban area of Porto is a great example of how, hand-in-hand, we can have a truly ecological and sustainable development within a big urban space. This huge park developed by Juan Muñoz emphasizes the link between nature and art. We did the Top tree walking path, and saw great examples of modern art, farms, museums and botanical gardens, to mention just a few of the parts. Video and photo documentations and tour are just a few actions that were done there.

The saltpans in Aveiro represent the mix of ecological and cultural heritage. Production of salt still remains very traditional and it is very important to reactivate industry and maintain the identity of this special city near the Atlantic coast. Eco guidance and presentation of the salt production and its modern reinterpretation were the activities that were expertly held there.

Porto

Exploring the surRounDing areas

Porto is a Mix of old and modern - A real "touristic magnet" is one of the best descriptions of Porto. We had a guided tour through one of the most important Wine Cellars in the heart of V.N. Gaia, then we visited a modern reinterpretation of an old local market, walked around on a photo-safari through the old city centre, interviewed tourists and then visited Serralves - these were only a few of the main activities. During the whole visit in Porto, students had investigation activities that combined heritage and modern touristic habits.

Aveiro

Exploring the surrouding areas

Aveiro is a modern city that is still growing fast and is a good example of heritage, care and development. It has got canals that connect the old and new part of city, and we could see the restauration of the old tile factory into a new musem and the way they look after many art deco houses, which are things that represent their care. Sailing in the canal was the best way to known this city better and to catch the spirit of traditional heritage that is still alive.

The tile workshop enabled students to collaborativly learn old Portuguese traditions of tile making. The Animation workshop enabled students to learn about the animation process. Also, it was an opportunity for a premiere of our collaborative animation short film, "Purgatory Airlines".
