"The Telephone Call" - Fleur Adcock

Fluer Adcock's 'The Telephone Call' is a short and cleverly funny telephonic conversation. She gets a call from "Universal Lotteries" and they tell her she is the winner of a lottery, and that she will become a millionaire or multimillionaire within a short period of time. Naturally, she was delighted. Moreover, they encouraged her to "give way" to her "emotion" as the moment called for it. After a moment, she realized what they were saying might be false. That is why she asked them on when she would receive the cheque or the money. They answered that they didn't deal with money. They dealt with experience and the line went dead.

The summary:

PART 1

The Themes

“From all of us Universal have a nice day!” This is a quote said by the Universal Lotteries workers to the poet Fleur. This shows that there is still some sense of humanity left in society and that people are still willing to sppare some kindness for free instead of being selfish about it. It also makes the readers have am understanding of the real reason the Universal staff members called the poet in the first place.

02

Society:

This is a main theme that is prominent all through the poem and one of the quotes to prove this is, “what would you do with a million pounds?” Initially, this is a question directed to the poet but it can also be a question to the reader. In which will persuade the reader into thinking a lot about what they would do if they had a million pounds.

01

Human greed:

Emotions are a difficult topic and hard to understand however, in the poem the poet points out, “I think im going to sneeze - or cry.” this insinuates that the poet in fact cant keep her current emotions at bay and is so shocked about the prize to the point where it may drive her to tears. Rational thoughts on the other hand, “I haven’t bought a lottery ticket,” This is when the poet was back to her right mind and started thinking about her situation; she started realizing that what is happening to her is surreal. Litteraly.

02

Emotions vs rational thoughts:

Personal Values is a term we use to describe what, well to put it simply, people personally value and think that it to be very important to them adding meaning to the item. “What would you do with a million pounds?” I’m reusing the same quote I used for greed because a lot of people really value their money and to them they would do nearly anything to get their hands on a million pounds.

PART 2

The poem

01

They asked me ‘Are you sitting down? Right? This is Universal Lotteries’, They said. ‘You’ve won the top prize, The Ultra-super Global Special. What would you do with a million pounds? Or, actually, with more than a million – Not that it makes a lot of difference Once you’re a millionaire.’ And they laughed.

02

‘Are you OK?’ they asked – ‘Still there? Come on, now, tell us, how does it feel?’ I said ‘I just…I can’t believe it!’ They said ‘That’s what they all say. What else? Go on, tell us about it.’ I said ‘I feel the top of my head Has floated off, out through the window, Revolving like a flying saucer.’

03

‘That’s unusual’ they said. ‘Go on.’I said ‘I’m finding it hard to talk.My throat’s gone dry, my nose is tingling.I think I’m going to sneeze – or cry.’ ‘That’s right’ they said, ‘don’t be ashamed Of giving way to your emotions. It isn’t every day you hearYou’re going to get a million pounds.

04

‘Relax, now, have a little cry; We’ll give you a moment…’ ‘Hang on!’ I said. ‘I haven’t bought a lottery ticketFor years and years. And what did you say The company’s called?’ They laughed again. ‘Not to worry about a ticket. We’re Universal. We operateA retrospective Chances Module.

05

‘Nearly everyone’s bought a ticket In some lottery or another, Once at least. We buy up the files, Feed the names into our computer, And see who the lucky person is.’ ‘Well, that’s incredible’ I said.‘It’s marvelous. I still can’t quite… I’ll believe it when I see the cheque.’

06

‘‘Oh,’ they said, ‘there’s no cheque.’ ‘But the money?’ ‘We don’t deal in money. Experiences are what we deal in. You’ve had a great experience, right? Exciting? Something you’ll remember? That’s your prize. So congratulations From all of us at Universal. Have a nice day!’ And the line went dead.

We hope you had a wonderful experience.

Thank you!
