Tessa slaps Hardin whenever he angers her, and she feels the need to control every aspect of his life, to know where he is and what he is doing at all times.

The Joker is highly unstable, manipulative and both physically and emotionally abusive of Harley. He belittles her, and Harley is unaware of the manipulation. She is submissive and devoted, satisfied with a minimum amount of affection. Many of the things she does are just to impress the Joker. The Joker makes her feel bad about herself, and exploits her vulnerability, manipulating her into doing what he wants.
