天照大御神, 天照大神

Amaterasu, goddess of the sun, she has been in competition with her brother Susanoo, the god of storms.

Not content with ruling the seas, Susanoo once set out to claim a portion of the domain of the heavens bequeathed to Amaterasu. She then threw him a challenge which he won, and Susanoo took advantage of his victory to annoy his sister without giving him respite.

Vexed, Amaterasu took refuge in a cave, which caused an endless night. Deprived of the sun, the Earth then became the prey of evil spirits. An unfortunate situation, which many deities tried to resolve but without success: Amaterasu refused to come out of his cave.

One day, a banquet was held near the cave to entice the goddess to come out. Intrigued by the laughter caused by the dance of the goddess of gaiety Uzume, Amaterasu slightly pushed the stone that blocked the cave to see a little more. This is where the god of strength Ame-no-Tajikarao took the opportunity to extricate her from her hiding place, the other deities present then blocking access to the cave so that she would not enter it again.

Coming out of his cave, Amaterasu then banished Susanoo from the kingdom of heaven. Today, Amaterasu's cave would still be visible in Kyushu, in the heights of the island.
