Synopsis

Maria and Tony, two young people, meet each other at a ball and they fell madly in love. However, they’re stuck in two rival gangs, and their relationship with their friends and family is getting spoiled by their love. One day, during a fight, Tony kills Maria’s brother. She decides to forgive her lover and to run away with him. However, the man she was supposed to marry, Chino, decides to kill Tony to take his revenge, as he was a close friend of Maria’s brother. He does it in front of Maria, who kills him because of the hate it brings her.

Such as in Romeo ad Juliet, Tony and Maria are living an impossible love because of their close-ones relationships and hate. Their love is going to lead them to the death of the girl's brother or cousin, the boy's best friend or cousin, and their own.

The gangs

The Jets are a gang initiated by Tony and his best friend Riff. It's a gang full of poor white people, considered by the rest of New York City as unsuccessful as they couldn't climb on the social ladder.

The Sharks are a gang led by Bernardo, Maria's brother, and his girlfriend Anita. The gang is full of immigrants from Puerto Rico. The Jets hates them because they consider that they are "stealing their lands".

It wouldn't be a Romeo and Juliet if it didn't talk about love. Tony and Maria start out on different sides of an ethnic turf war, and their love blooms to show everyone that fighting isn't the answer. That makes their doomed romance all the more tragic, but it also makes it very powerful: fostered in the middle of great hate and all the stronger for the negative emotions surrounding it.

Love's a complicated thing in West Side Story. On one hand, it's blind, impulsive, irrational, foolish, unrealistic, and just plain dangerous. On the other hand, it's all that matters.

After directing television episodes and several minor films for Universal Studios, he became a household name for directing 1975's summer blockbusters Jaws.
