ORTON-GILLINGHAM: Multi-sensory Phonics Instruction
History of Orton-Gillingham (OG)...
OG was the first teaching approach specifically designed to help struggling readers by explicitly teaching the connections between letters and sounds.
OG’s philosophy is to teach intensive, systematic phonics using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic techniques to appeal to learners' multisensory learning styles.
What Orton-Gillingham is all about...
Profile of a Ramsey Graduate
OG uses both real and nonsense words to practice decoding (sounding out) and encoding (writing).
+ info
OG is taught to all Kindergarten and First grade classes at Tisdale School.
- 3 Part Drill: Multi-sensory practice of letter sounds, formation & blending (visual, auditory, and blending)
The different components of OG:

“Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift.”
