Writing takes the form of scribbles and drawings (0 to 2 years)
Preliterate writer
Writing presents random letters. Children start to understand the role of letters (2 to 4 years)
Emergent writer
Writing shows how letters are grouped together to create words. Spelling is still "invented" (4 to 5 years)
Transitional writer
Writing displays more accurate spelling. Children are able to spell correctly words they memorize (5 to 6 years)
Fluent writer
