Diocletian, Roman emperor (284–305 ce) (born 245 ce, Salonae [now Solin, Croatia] — died 316, Salonae) Emperor Diocletian actually wasn’t even a Roman citizen, but a child born into a peasant family. He was born and raised in ancient Salona, today’s Solin. At the time Salona was the 4th largest settlement in the entire Roman Empire. Diocletian was born Diocles, a son of a scribe with not much of a bright future. One day he decided to join the army and that is where his rise begins. Diocletian’s great leadership made him a consul and later he became Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus – the Emperor. After 20 years of reign, he decided to entrust the empire to younger men. He returned to the neighbourhood of Salonae, on the edge of the Adriatic, where he had a magnificent palace built. The palace was built from island Brac stone, and the columns and sphinxes were brought here from Egypt. The modern town of Split, Croatia, occupies the site of its ruins. The fact that he ruled for so long and didn’t die a violent death but was the first Emperor to retire and then die is probably one of his greatest accomplishments! It is ironic perhaps that Diocletian’s tomb does not guard his bones, but those of Saint Domnius (sveti Duje), who died because of the persecutions that Emperor Diocletian ordered against Christians. Saint Domnius is considered a martyr and a patron of the city of Split. Can you find the entrance to the imperial apartments of the Palace of Diocletian?
