It is believed that kallikantzaroi stay underground, sawing the trunk of the world tree so that it will collapse, along with the Earth. However, according to folklore, when they are about to saw the final part, Christmas dawns and they are able to come to the surface. They forget the tree and come to bring trouble to mortals. Finally, on the Epiphany (6 January), the sun starts moving again, and they must return underground to continue their sawing. They see that during their absence the world tree has healed itself, so they must start working all over again. This is believed to occur annually.

Families have dinner together and wait for midnight. as soon as they start the countdown they prepare themselves with 12 grapes to eat when the 12th hour strikes. People do that because they make a wish for every grape they eat. Hopefully those wishes will come true in the new year. It is also usual to send new years wishes to everybody.

During dinner you eat: Starter = Breaded squid rings First = Pasta with clams Second = Shrimp and Mussels Dessert = Neapolitan pastiera or tiramisu 4. After dinner you play the ‘tombola della smorfia’ (a Neapolitan bingo) and you play 5 games minimum, but while playing you listen to the songs of Nino D'Angelo 5. The Janeiras is a tradition in Portugal that consists of singing songs in the streets by groups of people wishing a happy new year. These groups go door to door, asking residents for the leftovers of Christmas parties. Nowadays, these 'leftovers' often changed into money. They take place in January, starting on the 1st and extending to day 6, Day of Kings. Nowadays, many groups extend the “Cantar de Janeiras” (January singing) throughout the month. The general and sharper tradition is that groups of friends or neighbours come together, with or without instruments. After the group is done, and the lyrics and instruments are distributed, they will sing door-to-door through the neighbourhood. Happy year to all!

Bolo Rei - Portugal What is Bolo Rei? Bolo Rei or Portuguese Christmas Fruit Cake is, as the name states, a popular cake made during the holiday season. The cake is most popular between Christmas Day (December 25th) and in the New year on Kings Day (January 6th) in Portugal. A fun fact about Bolo Rei is traditionally there were two other things included within the cake – a fava bean (or broad bean) and a small prize (usually a toy). If you got the fava bean inside your slice of cake, it meant you had to supply the Bolo Rei at Christmas the following year. The small prize was usually a toy a child could ‘find’ within their slice. This is similar to the English tradition of hiding money in Christmas pudding to find.
