La classe de seconde media a travaillé cette année sur les vingt ans du 11 Septembre. Ils ont étudié la notion de commémoration et ont réalisé leur propre couverture commémorative pour le journal américain le New Yorker qui publie tous les 10 ans une couverture en hommage aux attentats. Ils vous expliquent ci-dessous leurs intentions et choix artistiques.

In the background we can see a lot of debris where one of the Twin Tower was. In the top right hand corner we can see a trafic light with the number 343 written on it. In the middle we can see glasses and throughout these glasses we can see the Twin Tower before the attacks. ​We chose the point of view of a random pedestrian that happened to be here after the attack to show that a lot of people are really sad of this disparition. We put the number 343 in a trafic light because it is the number of firefighters who died in the attack. ​​The colours on this covers are mostly grey and black to express the sadness of this event, the numbers on the traffic light are red to represent the colour of the firefighters' suit. However in the glasses we can see behind the Tower a blue sky to express the happiness of the life before the attacks. ​​In conclusion, we show the sadness and the nostalgia of the event, but we show too that even if a lot of people died during the attack and the Twin Towers are not there anymore, they will still be alive in our hearts and mind forever and we will never forget them.- Roman and Tristan

We will present this first cover to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11. First we are going to describe all the elements of the cover. Then, their meaning. Finally, we are going to explain how we did the cover. We can see in the middle a American flag on a balloon. There is the Twin Towers’ shadow on it. In the backgrounder, we can see the name of the newspapers : « The NewYorker ». In the top left corner, there is the price. And in the top right-hand corner, there is the publishing date. All the elements are on a black background. Every element is the symbol of something. So, the American flag on the balloon represent the Americans’ soul which ascend to the sky. That shows all the Americans are touched by the events and are in mourning. The shadow is here to understand we are talking about the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The background is black because it’s the color of mourning. The balloon hides the tittle a little to show the newspaper is dedicated to the commemoration and not here to make us promotion. Finally, we are going to explain how we did the cover. First of all, we drew the balloon, the tittle, and the American flag. Then. We painted in black the background with acrylic paint and the balloon in red and blue. At the end, we took a picture of the painting and we added the Twin Towers, the price and the date in editing. - Ondine and Charlotte

We have cut the cover in two parts, on the top we can see New York on the morning of September eleventh. On the bottom we can see September eleventh but at the end of the day. It’s a mirror effect. First of all, the top part represents a sunny day as we can see thanks to the big sun drawn in the top left-hand corner and also thanks to the blue background representing the sky. We can see the Twin Towers in the center of the picture which dominate the whole of New York. It’s a normal day in New York, people are going to work, going to the towers. We can even see the vegetation, healthy trees. Looking at the drawing we feel joy especially thanks to the bright color like blue, green, yellow… But unfortunately, as soon as we cross the blue lake, the color of the water is turning red because it represents blood. We can understand that the airplanes have just crashed into the Twin Towers. So we can see a big cloud of smoke in the middle of this part. Everything is destroyed, the towers have collapsed. We can also see a lot of debris. Moreover, next to the debris we can see big cracks on the towers which accentuate the violence of those attacks. The people are sad and frightened. We used sad colors to show the importance of this event. New York has gone up in smoke.The drawing highlights the fact that this event changed New York forever !-Zakari and Alexandra

First of all, our New Yorker’s cover represents the Twin Towers in the background. At the bottom we can see the debris of the towers, because they are falling down. The smoke is billowing out.At the top of the cover we can see the New Yorker’s title : the Y and the R are falling down. In the top left hand corner the price is written and in the the top right hand corner there is the date. There are 4 little people the blue jumps out of the left tower, the blue and the red at the top try to save themselves. The blue and the red are holding their hands while falling.Then, we are going to talk about the colors, we did the background in black to bring out the foreground. We made the Twin towers in white to make them look like ghosts because they will disappear. The smoke is grey like normal smoke. The New Yorker’s title is red because it’s not ne of the colors of the USA’s flag. The Y and the R are falling down because a part of New York left at the same time. They are one of the biggest symbol of the USA.- Lina and Emma

We notice at the top, the title is written in large black characters. On the left, vertically, the word “remember” is present and insists on the importance of never forgetting this tragedy. In the bottom right-hand corner, we can see one of the pools of the memorial for the victims of the terrorist attacks. It’s moving to read all the names of the victims. In the middle of the names, to symbolize their birthdays, there is a rose to show that we are still thinking of them. At the bottom left hand-corner, to commemorate the 20th anniversary, we observe black candles to represent the grief and its flames let out a lot of smoke that will spread over a large part of the cover. Inside the smoke, in the middle there are several elements to represent September 11. First, the twin towers are small and grey with the explosion in red, orange and yellow to attract our attention. The towers have been hit and will collapse. Above them, the airplane is big because it is an essential element in the attack. Next to the airplane, a firefighter appears as a savior in the smoke, he seems determined. The number 343 appeals to us because it refers to the number of firefighters who died in this tragic event. ​- Laura and Perrine P.

This document is a newspaper cover of the “New Yorker”. It was designed by me and by my classmate, Maxine, few days ago.We created it to commemorate the 9/11 attacks in the USA.If we were the New Yorker’s editors, we would have chosen to commemorate the 9/11 with this cover.It is composed of a title in the middle, a date in the top right hand corner and a price in the top left hand corner. The background of this cover is grey and the title is in the colours of the American flag.In the foreground, we can see a shadow of a huge black plane flying over the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.On these two towers are represented the victims of this terrible attack.We chose dark colours for this commemorative cover because it’s a day of mourning for Americans .We thought that representing the Twin Towers with pictures of the victims is a beautiful message because it shows all the people who died this day and it allows us not forget them.- Maxine and Amandine

At the top of this cover we can see the title of the newspaper. Its name is The New Yorker.In the top right-hand corner we can see the release date. This newspaper has been published on September 13th 2021. In the top left-hand corner, there is the price of the newspaper. It costs 3.50$. In the forground, we can see 3 firefighters. They are wearing dirty clothes. They all have a helmet and they look tired. Two firefighters are raising up the american flag. In the background, there is an impressive mountain of rubbles.We choose to work on this cover because we think that it represents an hopeful message for all the Americans who are shocked by the terrorist attack of September 11th 2021.The picture of the firefighters putting up the US flag in the middle of this place of destruction is a real symbol of the unity of americans against terrorism​.- Gaspard and Paul

I’ll begin with the background, so on it there are the stars of the american flag which is represented in black and white. Each star represents a state of the country .In the top left hand corner the name of the newspaper is written. Then just below it, on one of the stripes, written in vertical we can see the date of this event.Finally, in the bottom right hand corner the twin towers are represented with some faces of the victims who died. Then in the opposite of the tower is shown one of the plane which will crashed into the towers ​The colors of the cover are dark, it shows the mourning of the families. We used these colors to pay tribute to the many victims of the attacks.We can also see the faces of the victims in the reconstruction of the Twin Towers to represent the number of the deceased. The plane is there to show that it will crash in it. We have framed the date to mark the reader. The emotion put in the front are sadness and desolation. The message we want to convey is that we want to pay tribute to all this victims. With a cover that will surely have an impact in the country.- Louise and Eva

We’re going to separate our presentation in two parts : the description and the analysis.On the left of the cover, there is a part of one of the twin towers. On the right, we can see two persons who are jumping and falling into the free space and behind them we can observe a lot of faces of victims of these harrowing attacks. We put the New Yorker’s logo at the top. The cover is in black and white.The two persons who are jumping and falling into the free space represent all the victims of these attacks, that’s the reason why the faces of the other victims are behind them. It’s like the symbol of all the victims. For us, the fact the victims are holding their hands, is a symbol of opinion and solidarity during the attacks . We made the cover black and white because black stands for grief and white behind the pictures of victims refers to peace.- Raphaël and Hugo

On the cover we can see two pictures: one in the background and the other in the foreground. The picture in the background represents all the victims of the terrorist attack which happened on 9/11/2001. The other picture in the foreground is the city of New York. This picture is in the middle of the cover. In the foreground we can see two black blocks which replace the Twin Towers. On the bottom of the cover, we see the reflection of the Twin Towers in the water. The title “The New Yorker” is at the top of the cover. The date of the newspaper is in the top left-hand corner. The date of this edition is November 11 2021. The price of this cover is 20 cts. In the background on the left of the black blocks we can see the empire state building. The emotion of the cover is very important because the city of New York is in grief. The tones are cold and they bring out sad emotions. Every year, every September 11, the New Yorker releases a new cover to commemorate the harrowing events of 9/11. In the top left hand corner there is the price which is 3.50$. In the top right hand corner we can see the date of the release of the magazine, the 11 September 2021. At the top, we can see the title written in bold letters which is « The New Yorker »In the foreground, we drew New York City. The highest building is the Empire State Building. In the middle of the background there are the Twin Towers which are like vanishing. They vanished because they collapsed 20 years ago and they will rest in the new yorkers' memory forever. In the middle, on the right we chose to write a sentence, which is « we will never forget them ». « We » represents the new yorkers and « them » represents the Twin Towers. We chose not to put colors on our cover because colors means joy and hapiness but these events are not joyful, they are sad. The title and the sentence are in black because they are important: the sentence is in bold and black because it’s the message that we wanted to show trough this cover. - Elena and Perrine

At the top of the cover, we can see the tittle, some clouds and snow. Below the clouds, there is Brooklyn and the Hudson river. Just below the river, there are a lot of houses and buildings. At the bottom of the cover, there is the business district of Manathan. All around the 2 mens, there are a lot of towers for people who work in their offices. Then, in the middle of the drawing, there is a fireman and a policemen who replace the twin towers. The firefighter and the police officer drawn were mobilised during the september 11 attacks. The drawing is dark to accentuate the tribute. ​​That day, 348 firefighters and 62 policers died because they chose to sacrifice themselves to save people even though they could have survived.Thanks to them 9/10 survived during the attacks.The cover is made to show the bravery of the people that saved the victims that day.Our group has created a cover for the NEW YORKER about the 11/09 tragedy.For this presentation we choose to do a painting.- Sarah, Juliette, Raphaël T.

In the foregroud, there is the statue of liberty on the liberty island in New York. In the middle ground there is New York City with all the buildings during the night, in the middle at the top of the image we can see the top of the Twin Towers on clouds, it’s like they are floating on the clouds. Then at the top of the cover there is the date, the title and the price. Finally it’s well lit up, there’s a cold blue atmosphere and we can see two rays of light passing trough the Towers and the clouds.​First , we chose the nigth because its during the night that the city is the most beautiful and it's during the nigtht that we think and dream about the past.We decided to put the World Trade Center because it's where all happened and it shows that since the attack, the city rebuilt itself .Besides we can see the rays of light of the commemorative monument connecting the ghost of the twin towers despite the city's being restored , people remember and will remember september 11.​- Adam and Clément
