Historical background:The first colonisers of South-Saharan Africa were the Arabs. During the Middle Ages, Africa was home to powerful monarchies that ruled vast territories. The first Europeans to trade with Africa were the Portuguese, then other colonial powers established slave trade bases. From the end of the Second World War, decolonisation and the formation of independent states began.
