Sustainable Development Goal 1
This study was performed to reduce poverty by introducing "pro-poor tourism".

This can increase the number of tourist, raising income and at the same time reduce poverty via tourism.

Analyze which poor households participate in tourism insudtry and investigate the impact of income from tourism sector.

The income poverty line is used to identify the poor.

BACKGROUND OF STUDY

  • 22.3% individuals working in tourism sector.
  • 25.32% of the total income of poor households are contributed by tourism industry.
  • The average income is RM785 with maximum value RM1800 and minimum value RM120.

In 2002, there are 210 poor households that registered in langkawi island. 120 0f them were selected to be interviewed. Have varies age distributions from 60 years old and above to below 29 years old with 109 males and 11 females. High school leavers, primary school education and polytechnic or STPM level.
