SPAIN IN THE 15th and 16th CENTURY

From the Middle Ages to the modern ages.In navigation bigger and faster ships were built,making easier to travel long distances. The invention of charts, compass and astrolabe,made voyages safer. This improved commerce with faraways countries and led to the discovery of new trading routes.Monarchs had all the power and great armies.The nobility had less power like clergy, and bourgeoisie had money.Catholic Monarchs conquered thekingdom of Granada.

DISCOVERY OF AMERICA

S. XV

In the 15th century, many people thought the world was flat. Christopher Columbus was convinced the world was round and he could sail straight to Asia by crossing the Atlantic Ocean. He presented his project to sail west to Asia to the Catholic Monarchs.

1493

  • The first island he reached was called San Salvador in the Bahamas and called the inhabitants Indians.
  • After the first voyage, Columbus returned to América three times.
  • He thought he had reached the Indies and never knew what and amazing discovery he had made.Years after, an Italian sailor called Americo Vespucio proved that those lands were a new continent.

1492

In 1492 The Catholic monarchs gave him ships, men and materials. On 3rd August 1492 Columbus left Huelva with three ships: Pinta, Niña and Santa María. On 12th October,after 70-day voyage, the sailors saw land, they reached the NEW WORLD. WATCH THE VIDEO UNTIL THE 1:23

Consequences

The discovery of América had many consequences: 1º. Columbus bought back to Spain new products:

  • Fruits and vegetables: tomato, corn, pumpkin, vainilla, patata, cocoa beans,..
  • animals: turkey
  • Minerals: gold and silver.
2º. Spain brought products to América like:
  • cofee, banana,onion,grapes, honeybee, rice, oil, wine
  • animals: horse, cow, hen, pig,...
  • cloth, wool, leather,..
3º. Spain became the most powerful empire in Europe. It brought their language and religion to America. 4º. Spanish ports, such as Sevilla, grew in importance and ship-building industry, because the increasing of ships. 5º. Worl trade increased, because gold and silver were used to trade.
