Schizophrenia is a dangerous mental illness in which patients have distorted perceptions of reality. Schizophrenia can include hallucinations, delusions, and profoundly abnormal thought and behavior, which can make it difficult to function on a daily basis. People with this condition need to be treated for the rest of their lives, but this illness can never be cured.

Causes of this Illness
- Avoid using illegal drugs.
- Use alcohol in moderation.
- Make a concerted effort to improve your social abilities as much as possible.
- Avoid being socially isolated.
- Make a concerted effort to develop adult friendships.
Although there is no guaranteed solution to prevent schizophrenia, abiding to the treatment plan can help prevent relapses and symptoms worsening. There are, however, some things you can do ->

Warning signs include:
- Social disengagement, depression
- Extreme hostility or suspicion in response to criticism
- Personal hygiene has deteriorated.
- A flat, emotionless stare
- Inability to cry or express happiness, as well as inappropriate laughing or crying
- Insomnia or oversleeping; forgetfulness or inability to concentrate
- Strange or illogical statements; unusual wording or mannerisms

Signs of having schizophrenia generally first appear in the ages through 16-30. In some rare cases, children can also show the symptoms.

- The average life that is lost for individuals with schizophrenia is 28.5 years in the US.
- The symptoms are highest in black Americans (21.1%), Latino Americans (19.9%), and white Americans (13.1%).

- Men and women are equally affected by this disease. This disease has absolutely no gender preference.
- There is however an age preference that is in turn dependent on the gender. In case of males, Schizophrenia will attack for the first time within the age range 16-20.
- In case of females, Schizophrenia will attack for the first time within the age range of 25-30.
