Total Physical Response-tpr

WHAT IS THE TPR?

James Asher: method was developed in the 1960s and 1970s

+ ino

It is a method of language teaching that combines speech with action and proposes to teach the language through the combination of verbal and motor skills, facilitating the acquisition of the second language and carrying out the natural process of learning the mother tongue.

TPR

I generally do TPR with:

  • Actions (they do the action or a gesture corresponds to an action).
  • Classroom material (they teach it to me with objects)
  • Body parts (they show me with their body)
  • Colors (they look for objects with this color)
  • Story structures (TPRS: they make the gesture)

EXAMPLES FOR USING TPR

The teacher indicates actions (clap, jump, raise your hand, etc.) and performs them at the same time as the children. In a second step, the teacher indicates the actions, but does not perform them, only the children will do it. In a last variant, the teacher can trick the children by performing an action other than the one indicated. Those who make a mistake can be eliminated. All students like to be the last one. It is convenient that it is not always the same one to maintain the motivation of the group.

ACTIVITY: SIMON SAYS

Then we add adverbs to model the actions: Get up quickly Get up slowly Get up scratching your head... Listen to the table Listen to your shoulder

It starts with very simple actions: Get up Sit down Go Jump Play.... Listen see

ACTIVITY 2: ACTIONS

¡Thank you!
