CRIMINOLOGY
Why is it important for laws to change as society changes?
1. Laws have the essential purpose of promoting the common good; that is, the well-being of the people of a community, as well as making possible justice, security, freedom and other values of great importance in social life, therefore it is important that the laws are modified at the same time as the society, because it is very changeable.
2. Defining crime is problematic because crime is a social construction and therefore highly dependent on the context in which it is set. For example, the law changes with the times, which means that acts that are considered criminal at one time are not necessarily considered criminal at another time.
Why is the term "criminal" so broad in its definition?
3. Law enforcement describes the agencies and employees responsible for enforcing laws, maintaining public order, and managing public safety.
What is the role of law enforcement in a criminal investigation?
4. Once the potential criminal is arrested, the case will go to court. The court has the following powers of decision: Determine if the case is valid (if the police have sufficient evidence). Decide if the case requires a jury or if the judge can decide. Determine whether the defendant should be out of prison or in prison awaiting trial. If you can't afford it, appoint an attorney. These decisions made by the court have a great impact on whether the defendant will eventually go to jail. In fact, two people charged with the same crime can have very different experiences, depending on their attorneys, how much money they have, and the judge overseeing their case. The judicial process can be long and complicated. A case can take several years to complete the entire process.
What decisions are made on behalf of a person who has been charged with a crime once they reach the court system?
5. These are the steps that are followed to make the law: Values They are beliefs about what is acceptable and unacceptable in society. As a country, the United States values the justice, equality, individual liberty, and sanctity of human life set forth in our Constitution. These rules focus more on actions and expectations of how we should act in certain situations. All of these are learned at a very young age. The law is formulated in accordance with our values and standards at all times. However, it takes more time to change existing laws, resulting in outdated laws that may not apply to our society.
Think about everything you have learned about the American justice system. This includes: how laws are made, what determines that an action is a crime, and how politics, society, and economics are involved. Do you believe that the laws the United States are created and enforced in a fair manner?
