When the dogs arrive at John Thornton's camp, they slowly begin to die until there are only five left. Thornton informs the men that the ice on the road is melting, but Hal refuses to listen him. Finally, both dogs and men fall and die.

Buck takes on the role of watchdog and succeeds admirably. Soon after, he begins to work the difficult and exhausting postal route. He and the other dogs are sold to Charles and Hal.

Buck enjoys his new job as a sled dog, despite traveling through a wild world. Buck demonstrates his creativity and fighting dog potential to defeat another vicious dog.

Francois and Perrault buy Buck. This dog, confused by the uncivilized life in the Yukon, meets Spitz, another sled dog who is cruel and greedy and who rejects him immediately.

The story begins with Buck who is Judge Miller's pet, and he lives a life of comfort and adventure. But Buck is shortly after kidnapped and sent to work as a sled dog as the Klondike gold festival grows in popularity.
