The young boy loves, respects, adores and feels proud of his grandfather at the beginning of the story. The narrator mentioned that he dreamt to grow up and be like his grandfather since the grandfather was a perfect man : he was good looking, greeted, respected and honoured by everyone in the village.

The narrator begins to question his admiration to his grandfather right away when he learn about their neighbour Masood , and how he had been wronged and exploited by his grandfather who turns out to be greedy and inhuman - as he believes- after He had usurped most acres of Masood's land.

So when his grandfather gives him a handful of dates taken unlawfully from the poor Masood's harvest, he eats them but soon vomite them to display his hate and disgust for his greedy grandfather whom he had been adoring dearly.

The boy's feelings has entirely changed towards the grandfather. They transformed into bitter feelings hate, disrespect, disobey and he feels ashamed of his grandfather.
