Potential negativesA potential negative is the possible extinction of the originial papaya.
History and PurposeA disease that targets papayas had started in Hiwaii in the 40's and by the 90's it was major. Gonslaves, a scientist at Cornell genetically modified the fruit into the rainbow papaya. This new varient was able to fight off the disease.
Current and future useThese fruits are used as a common food source in Hawaii. Its is also a major export allowing for jobs and money. With no sighn of slowing down, it will most likely continue throughout our lifetime.
Positive impactsNot only did it allow the papaya to live, it also helped out the farmers. The development allowed the farmers to continue to produce a product that they have worked so long and hard for, as well as continue to make money off of it.
