We use adverbs to add more information about a verb, an adjective, another adverb, a clause or a whole sentence and, less commonly, about a noun phrase.

ADVERBS MEANINGS AND FUNCTIONS

  • Describe how sb does an action
  • go before the main verb/ after the auxiliary/ at the end of a sentence.

Manner adverbs are often formed from adjectives by adding SERIOUS - SERIOUSLYWARM - WARMLYHAPPY - HAPPILYHEAVY - HEAVILYPOLITE - POLITELYIMMEDIATE - IMMEDIATELY

ADVERB

  • Driving fast is dangerous.
  • People always spell my name wrong.
  • That builder never does anything right!
  • You have to bang the door hard to shut it.
  • My company pays me monthly.

ADJECTIVE

  • I was never a fast swimmer
  • All of your answers were wrong.
  • Is that the right time?
  • This coconut is really hard. You’ll need a hammer to break it up.
  • I get a monthly pay cheque

Some common manner adverbs have the same form as adjectives and they have similar meanings.

hard, fast, free, high, low, deep. early, late, long, near, straight, right, wrong, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly

ADVERB WITH A DIFFERENT MEANING

He is deeply in love with her.The animals in this park can run freely.He is a highly respected doctor.He hasn’t been feeing well lately.She nearly fainted when she heard the news.They hardly go anywhere because they have little kids. I’m mostly interested in swimming.

She pushed her hands deep into her pockets.He offered to do it for free.We flew high above the city.We got there too late and all the tickets had been sold.I stood near the window.She tried very hard but she wasn't quite fast enough.Which subject do you like most?

The water is a lot deeper than it seems.People should be free to say what they think.It's ten metres high.I was late for work this morning.The nearest garage is 10 miles away.The seats in the waiting room were hard and uncomfortable.

ADJECTIVE

Some adverbs have two forms with different meaning.

Some words end in but they are adjectives:ELDERLY, COWARDLY, FRIENDLY, LIKELY, DEADLY, LIVELY, LONELY, SILLY, UGLY, LOVELY, etc.We use the words way/manner to form their adverbs:She greeted me in a friendly way/manner.
