South Korea is a country in East Asia, located in the southern part of the Korean peninsula. It limits the north with North Korea. To the east is the Sea of Japan to the south the Strait of Korea, which separates it from Japan, and to the west the Yellow Sea. Its capital is Seoul.

HISTORY
The country was divided; At the end of WWII, the Japanese surrendered to Soviet and US forces, which occupied the northern and southern halves of Korea, respectively.North Korea and South Korea were separated by an agreement between the Soviet Union and the United States.
The country tends to have a humid continental climate and a humid subtropical climate and is affected by the East Asian monsoon with heavier rainfall in summer during a short rainy season called jangma, which begins in late June and ends in late July.

The official language of the country and the one most spoken by South Koreans is clearly Korean, it has its own alphabet, called Hangul, which was invented around the 15th century. There are 24 characters; 14 consonants and 10 vowels. The Korean spoken in South Korea differs in some aspects from that spoken by North Koreans, such as pronunciation, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. For its part, English is widely used as the second language.

South Korea is divided into nine provinces and six cities with a provincial category (Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, Taejon, Kwangju, and Inchon). Previously, the president elected both provincial governors and mayors, but in 1995 elections were established for its nomination. The provincial and municipal councils are directly elected.
