The story

The Meltz have hijacked a shipment of gold bars which was being moved from the Probabilium bullion store Fort Fox. Under the command of Major Werkoosterfug, they killed the guards, morphed into them, wore their clothes, and went to a secret hideout where they are planning to melt the gold into Krorz and transport it back to Zorg (the Meltz home planet.) Miss A Go and the rest of the police force are at a loss. Miss A Go calls in The Thief to try and locate the whereabouts of the gold. Set a Thief to catch a Thief, she says. The Thief calls in Numberella, Ronnie and Harry Hijack to help. Harry will run operations from a secret mobile location, whilst Numberella and Ronnie, being children, will be able to operate with less suspicion. However, they are both required to wear disguises.

The story

Once Numberella has gained access to the leisure centre, she locates the suspect, who is playing tennis... and sweating! Back to square one. Ay Caramba!

The story

Numberella and Ronnie radio the Thief with the boat's identification number. Success! The Thief arrives with Miss A Go on a police boat and they see the vessel in question. There is a high speed chase, the boat is stopped, and the gold is recovered.. But the Meltz jump overboard and escape. Major Werkoosterfug is still at large!

Numberella has been tailing a man she suspects of being Major Werkoosterfug, because despite the fact that it is boiling hot in Probabilium, he never seems to sweat. (A tell tale sign that he could be a Meltz.) She tracks him to a leisure centre where she has to crack an entry code to access the facilities.

Ronnie meanwhile is getting a Tropiburger in downtown Probabilium when he notices that the burger flipper is not sweating despite being so close to a griddle. His suspicions are aroused and he waits outside the back of the burger van for the burger flipper to leave. He follows her and rather than going home, she goes to a warehouse. Ronnie isn’t close enough to see the code she enters to access it. He calls for help and tells Numberella to get herself over there.

Once inside the building they soon realise they are on the right track. They discover the clothes of the dead guards, which bear the bleach marks typical of a Meltz execution squad and also see tell tale traces of slime on the floor, which the Meltz leave behind when they take their shoes off. (They hate wearing shoes as their feet are naturally splayed, like a ducks). This is also why they can’t run very fast when they are disguised as humans.

They follow the slime trail of the burger flipper to an elevator door, which is also protected by a security code. They contact Harry Hijack, who has uncovered a clue as to what it might be, but they need help to crack it.The elevator has hundreds of different buttons. They realise that they have accessed a legendary Meltz warp elevator, which can travel through space and time. Which one should they press? Harry hacks into the database and manages to come up with some possibilities – but they must solve tough puzzle to get it to move. If they get it wrong, they could be delivered straight into the clutches of Colonel Szplug. Can you solve the Cryptogram to enter the elevator?

They arrive at an undergound lake where they can see evidence of a boat having just left the quay. They are too late! They must radio the thief to see if she can intercept the gold. They try to go back the way they came but the door is locked so they have to take a boat themselves which they think might be in the boat house. They need to crack the padlock which is a number code.

TThey get their own boat and zoom through the underground lake before suddenly coming out into a canal in north east Probabilium. They are nearly run over by a water taxi. They desperately need to identify the boat. Harry has managed to work out that the number plate of the boat is a palindromic number below 200 which is also a square number. Which boat is it?!
