The largest of contributing factors is the emission of greenhouse gases upon burning fossil fuels in various sectors of industry, transport, etc. Around 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions are produced by transport, with this percentage being one of the fastest growing. Car transport is by far the biggest contributor, with more than 40% of transport emissions. In 2002, the European Mobility Week has first taken place and since then it has become an annual initiative in an increasing number of cities, created by the European Commission´s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, with the goal of raising public awareness of the impacts of transport on climate change. The EMW is designed to provide cities with one week of experimentation with innovative planning measures, promotion of new infrastructures and technologies, reception from the public, etc. The sustainable transport which the EMW promotes can be achieved through decreasing car dependency, encouraging use of public transport, pedestrian and bicycle-friendly urban planning, etc. As such, the most popular day of the week is the Car Free Day, always at 22 of September.

Climate change is one of the most concerning problems of our time

European Mobility Week in our schools

We joined the initiative with our school activities to mobilize students in terms of greener ways of transport. We shared activities our students joined this year and also raised awareness and educated ourselves on these topics.1, older students prepared worksheets on transportation and its impact on the environment for younger students2, we created and exchanged QR codes about the topic3, we created lesson plans for trafic education combined with environmental education4, we shared the activities which our schools and communities do during European Mobility Week

Although research has identified as many as 40,000 sources of groundwater, available data show that only 0.35 million cubic meters of 23 million cubic kilometers of water are under the age of 50. This is just one of the harms that we humans do to nature, unfortunately. Peer education in our schools

Lesson plans/worksheets created by Slovak students were used in the lessons in Slovakia and also in peer education in Poland

EMW lessons in our schools

Polish students also created several quizzes in the field of transportation

EMW lessons in our schools

Slovak older students also created lesson plans for trafic education for young learners including educational videos and materials created by partners from Lithuania, Poland and Turkey.

EMW lessons in our schools

We learnt various road safety measures, traffic signs, basic rules for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists, about statistics of road accidents and impact of transportation on our environment.

EMW lessons in our schools

We had Trafic and Environmental Education Taught by Peers in classes: "prima, sekunda, tercia and kvarta"

EMW in Slovak town Hlohovec

EMW in our communities

This year´s European Mobility Week is the seventh time our city, Hlohovec, has participated in the initiative. This year we have participated by implementing measures old and new, temporary and permanent.Similarily to previous years, activities were organized in local kindergartens, primary and secondary schools related to mobility awareness. On the last day of the week, on the Car Free Day, the area of St.Michael´s square was closed from cars and the Jazda po Fraštáku a public bicycle ride around the town´s vicinity was organized this year again with high attendance. Of the temporary measures a new feature this year was public transport around the city for free. Some of the permanent features of this EMW were the improvement of bicycle networks and a development of bicycle hiring and sharing systems.

The European Mobility Week is celebrated in Turkey every year from 16-22 September. This year's activities will focus on Safe Walking and Biking. Participation by Turkish cities increases every year. In 2018, 26 cities participated and this year's target is for 61 cities have registered. They organise:"Car Free Sunday", “Zero Emission for All”They have cargo electric scooters on the streets. People can rent and use it with a card. Turkish students planned a nature walk. And took photos and raised the awareness with a second spot video. They also had the "10,000 steps every day" activity.

EMW in our communities

256 Polish towns/cities participated in European Mobility Week with their activities within the EMW, their permanent acitivites or car-free days in 2021.For example in Warszawa they implemented many new measures such as:-creating or enlarging pedestrian streets-launching of integrated services for the various public transport modes-creating park and ride stations-creating useful tool for people with reduced mobility-improving charging points for electric vehicles-creating systems for buses and walking trains and many others

Lithuanian cities participate in European Mobility Week every year. In their capital city Vilnius they celebrated mobility week and car free day, the main street of Vilnius – Gediminas avenue – was dedicated only for pedestrians and cyclists. Their EMW team prepared its stand where public could participate in different games about sustainable mobility.
