Misty is the Gym Leader of the Cerulean City Gym and specializes in Water-type Pokémon. She gives the Cascade Badge to trainers that defeat her.

Lt. Surge serves as the Gym Leader at Vermilion City's Gym. He holds the Thunder Badge for the trainers that can defeat him, and specializes in Electric type Pokémon.

She serves as the Gym Leader of the Celadon City Gym. Erika specializes in using Grass-type Pokémon, and awards the Rainbow Badge to Trainers that manage to defeat her.

Koga served as the Gym Leader at the Fuchsia City Gym. Two years later, during the Generation II games, Koga also became a member of the Elite Four and his daughter, Janine took over his gym and used Poison-type Pokémon as well. He specializes in Poison-type Pokémon, and as a Gym Leader gave out the Soul Badge for Trainers that could defeat him.

Brock is originally the Gym Leader of Pewter City Gym but he decided to follow his dream to become the greatest Pokémon Breeder. After his defeat against Ash Ketchum, he quickly gave up his title. He accompanied Ash on his journey , all while trying to live up to his goal. He currently wishes to be a great Pokémon Doctor.
