Anita Roddick
Anita roddick founded the body shop IN 1976 AS WELL AS BEING A PASSIONATE ANIMAL AND HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST. HER BUSINESS STARTED OFF AS A SMALL SHOP ON HE BRIGHTON HIGHSTREET PAINTED GREEN TO REPRESENT ITS ETHICAL VALUES. I BELIEVE HER MULTITUDE OF ENTREPRENEURAL QUALITIES ARE THE SOLE REASON WHY HER BUSINESS STARTED AN ECO-FRIENDLY REVOLUTION IN ALL ASPECTS OF EVERYDAY LIFE.
ANITA WAS NOT FROM A 'PRIVILIDGED BACKGROUND' AS SHE WAS THE THIRD CHILD OF TWO ITALIAN IMMIGRANTS WHO RESIDED IN WEST SUSSEX. THROUGHOUT THEIR CHILDHOODS, RODDICK AND HER SIBLINGS HAD TO WORK LONG HOURS IN THEIR PARENTS' SMALL CAFE EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK TO SAVE PRECIOUS MONEY. THIS MEANS EVER SINCE A YOUNG AGE, ANITA KNEW THAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO WORK AS HARD AS HER PARENTS DID IN ORDER TO SECURE A GOOD FUTURE. ANITA SPENT MUCH OF HER EARLY ADULTHOOD TRAVELLING THE WORLD- TAKING UP A MANIFOLD OF JOBS ALONG THE WAY (SUCH AS WORKING IN THE INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANISTAION'S WOMEN'S RIGHTS DEPARTMENT IN PARIS). IT WAS WHILE TRAVELLNG THAT RODDICK PICKED UP MANY ENTREPRENEURAL SKILLS AND EVENTUALLY APLLIED WHAT SHE HAD LEARNT ABOUT SELF-CARE AROUND THE WORLD INTO THE BODY SHOP.
QUALITIES SHE PICKED UP FROM TRAVELLING:- CREATIVITY-INDEPNDENCE AND TEAMWORK-CONDUCTED 'MARKET RESEARCH'-CURIOSITY-PASSION-MOTIVATION-VISIONARY
IN 1975, 5 YEARS AFTER HER MARRIAGE TO GORDAAN RODDICK, ANITA WAS LEFT TO FEND FOR HERSELF AND HER 3 CHILDREN DUE TO HER HUSBAND GOING TRAVELLING. BY THIS POINT, THE COUPLE CO-OWNED A B&B AND AN ITALIAN HEALTH FOOD SHOP.IN ORDER TO BRING IN A SMALL INCOME, RODDICK MANAGED TO NEGOTIATE A £6,000 LOAN FROM THE BANK TO SET UP HER OWN SKINCARE COMPANY. THIS SHOP WAS INSPIRED BY ONE SHE HAD SEEN IN CALIFORNIA ON HER TRAVELS AND ITS RANGE CONSISTED OF 15 DIFFERENT PRODUCTS IN A RANGE OF SIZES TO MAKE IT LOOK LARGER.THE NOW-ICONIC DARK GREEN COLOUR THAT DECORATED THE WALLS WAS JUST A METHOD TO COVER UP THE MOULD ON THE WALLS- THIS FACT ACCUENTUATES JUST HOW SHORT ON MONEY THEY WERE.
FROM THEN ON, THE BODY SHOP GREW AND GREW ACROSS THE GLOBE UNTIL ANITA SOLD IT TO L'OREAL IN 2006 (SHORTLY BEFORE HER DEATH). ALL THROUGH HER CAREER AS A BUSINESS EXECUTIVE, RODDICK WAS LABELLED AS 'LOQUACIOUS, WACKY AND OPINIONATED' AND 'FAR OUTSIDE THE NORMAL BUSINESSWOMAN TEMPLATE'. HER STRIVE TO SUCCEED AND CONFIDENCE MEANT SHE USED HER PLATFORM AND BUSINESS AS A STAGE FOR RAISING AWARENESS ON SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE.
ANITA MADE THE 'PERFECT' ENTREPRENEUR AS SHE KNEW WHAT SHE WANTED AND WAS VERY WORK-DRIVEN. INCLUDING HER ACTIVISM WORK IN THE MANUFACTURE OF HER PRODUCTS SHOWED SHE CARED AND WANTED TO USE HER BUSINESS FOR THE THE GREATER GOOD.
