Watch Aretha Franklin sing her famous song ‘Respect’. Find out about its main message and explain how it makes you feel.

STEP 1 - THE MESSAGE

“Respect” was written and recorded by soul singer Otis Redding in 1965. Aretha Franklin rewrote some of the lyrics when she recorded it in 1967, to sing it as a woman rather than a man. Her feminist version contrasts with Redding’s more traditional one, and became a big hit.
