What are conjunctions?

What are Conjunctions?

Conjunctions are among the most important words in the English language, They help modify the sentence by joining together the words, phrases, or parts of the sentences. In addition, it helps make the text flow more smoothly by making it look like a sentence instead of bulleted points They can also be jokingly referred to as "The Glue of the English Language". Most of the times, we hear the following three conjunctions: and, or, and but.

Few Examples of the usage of Conjunctions in the english language:

  • I'd love a bottle of coke *and* a bucket of popcorn.
  • Data was gathered through questionnaires *and* interviews.
  • She usually studies in the library *or* at a cafe.
  • The stick was thin *but* it was strong.

Types Of Conjunctions

Conjunctions are broadly classified into 3 types, which are:

  • Coordinating Conjunctions
  • Subordinating Conjunctions
  • Correlative Conjunctions

What purposes do these types serve?

Types of conjunctions

Correlative Conjunctions

  • Correlative conjunctions are Words that work together to join parts of a sentence that have equal significance, They can identify both mathcing and contrasting ideas.
  • Few Correlative Conjunctions are: Either/or, Neither/ nor, so/ as, Not only/ But also etc.
  • Few examples of the usage of these conjunctions:
  • Mathew likes neither science nor math.
  • He not only studies hard, but also works well.

Subordinating Conjunctions

  • Used to link or connect two independent and complete claus with a dependent clause, the meaning of these clauses rely on the main clause for meaning. and relevance.
  • Few Subordinating Conjunctions are: Once, As, Although, While, If, Though etc.
  • Few Examples of these conjunctions:
  • He inspires me always because he believes in me.
  • I trust him because he is a trustworthy person.

Coordinating Conjunctions

  • Used to link or connect two words or phrases that are equally important and complete in terms of grammar.
  • There are 7 conjunctions for this type: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
  • Few exmples of these conjunctions:
  • I like football, and I like hockey.
  • I told her to leave, for I was very tired.
  • He tried to complete his work before the deadline but failed.

Informative tips on using conjunctions!

Now that we've learnt what a conjunction is and what its types signify, its time to learn some tips/rules on how to use them! (+tricks!). There are a certain number of tips and tricks you can use to enhance the quality of your clause grammar-wise and how your clause sounds to the listener.

Some tips that could be useful are:

  • When joining two clauses with a coordinating conjunction, always place a comma before the conjunction.
  • Try to avoid overusing FANBOYS in the beggining of a clause, it may sound a bit punchy.
  • When using correlative conjunctions, try to place the correlative conjunction directly before the words you want to link.

Mnemonic devices

Mnemonic devices: Memory devices!

Most of you might know what a Mnemonic device exactly is and how to form one. Mnemonic devices are simple tricks to remembering basically anything u find hard to remember. To form a Mnemonic device make use of elaborative encoding, retrieval cues, and imagery as key elements in order to make your own Mnemonic device.

There are pre-existing mnemonic devices about conjunctions, but you could make your own too!Few examples of pre-existing mnemonic devices are:

As seen in the above pictures, the mnemonic devices used here are:

  • FANBOYs a very famously known acronym used for remembering the conjunctons of the coordinating type.
  • A WHITE BUS, another mnemonic device, but this device is used to recall the conjunctions of the subordinating type.
  • THAMOs is another conjunctive adverb that show the relationship between two complete thoughts. The letters stand for "Therefore," "However," "Also," "Meanwhile," and "Otherwise.
