When we are working in public spaces it is really important to be aware of our presence, consider our working space, impact on thoroughfare and storage of any collected refuse and equipment!

Stay on the right path! Stick to the pavements and accessible places, when working along the road side stay on the pavement.

Be aware when you are working along roads even if you do not think they are busy roads. Make sure you are noticeable and where possible spend little time in the direct path of traffic.

Conservation Action! Why not get together with some friends or local conservation organisation to plan some conservation activities. Take some time to check out the greenspaces you are cleaning up and see what wildlife you can spot, also if you speak to a local expert or enthusiast they may have some information on what species are local and that may need extra support. Why not: Build and hang a bird box Make a bug hotel out of old sticks Plant wildflower meadows Make bat boxes Please note: You must get permission from the council or landowner before making physical changes to the landscape!

Don't venture into overgrowth, especially when you are working alone - there may be unseen hazards which can put you at risk.

Activity or quiz

Do remove litter that you can reach and access safely!

Be SEEN! Wearing hi-visibility clothing is a good idea, you will be noticeable and easily identified as someone who is carrying out work. People may ask you what you are doing, the best thing to do is tell them, they will more than likely support what you are doing and be happy someone is taking time to improve the neighborhood!

Being safe is important for you and others around you!

Find a space to place your filled refuse sacks. Its best to tie them off and store them neatly out the public right of way!

Don't create piles of litter in the pathway, it obstructs the way for pedestrians. It also looks unsightly and might seem to others that you are causing a problem rather than solving it!

If you are being supported by the local authority or an organisation they may provide you with kit, traffic cones and barriers can be used effectively to notify the public and drivers there is work going on. Why not use some signage to convey the message too!

REPORTING

Evidence is useful, record and document fly-tipping events so when you report it you can offer them more information and get the problem resolved quickly.

How to deal with dangerous issues! Some incidents must be reported separately, the local authority can handle most fly-tipping and general waste, and the environment agency can be notified to seek further action such as sanctions, fines and prosecution. For further support regarding criminal activity you can notify local enforcement. See below further information that can be found on GOV.UK/report-an-environmental-incident Report waste crimeYou can report waste crime anonymously to Crimestoppers, such as dumping large amounts of waste illegally. Clue! The local council's logo is on the bin you can call up their public realm services to notify them of the issue! Each local authority will have their own way of managing these issues, for Newham visit their website or you can download the Love Clean Streets app which will cover most boroughs in Greater London including Newham downloadable on Apple and Android.
