ELECTIVE Tracks

Explore the impact of technology on student learning and the classroom and how Canvas can help improve student achievement, motivation, and engagement.

Leverage strategies that enhance engagement, motivate learners, and create a progression toward learning goals, as you learn to maximize the impact on student achievement.

Create opportunities for student voice and choice within the learning environment. Making the shift to a student-centered approach means thinking differently about the role of the learner from receiver of learning to active participant.

Deepen your experience with these digital learning tools that enhance learning in Canvas as part of its dedication to open standards.

EFFECTIVE ASSESSMENT TRACK

  • Creating High Quality Assessments: Creating High-Quality Assessments will explore what pre-assessment, formative assessment, and post assessment look like in Canvas with technology tools, and how to use the data tools in Canvas to determine continuous improvement.

  • Using Assessments for Data-Driven Decisions: Using Assessments for Data-Driven Decisions will focus on connecting standards/outcomes/competencies to assessments in Canvas, and using the data to determine alignment and assessment effectiveness

LIMITLESS LEARNING TRACK (K12 Focus)

  • Promoting Digital Citizenship: Promoting Digital Citizenship will explore the ways Canvas can support the three aspects of Digital Citizenship for Limitless Learning: equitable access to technology, safe and ethical computing, and global communication.

  • Managing a Technology-Rich Learning Environment: Managing a Technology-Rich Learning Environment will explore how Canvas supports classroom management and creating collaborative learning opportunities in technology-rich classrooms.

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS TRACK (HED Focus)

  • Humanizing Learning in Canvas: this course will explore how Canvas can support humanizing online learning to support students’ physical and mental well-being to develop lifelong health and wellness practices and deeper, more joyful learning.

  • Creating Global Cultural Competence in Canvas: this course will support educators in developing items in Canvas that lead students to develop a position on an intercultural issue by exploring multiple cultural perspectives, then acting to support this position in a meaningful way.

INSPIRED LEADERSHIP TRACK

  • Leading with Canvas: Leading with Canvas will explore the ways a teacher leader can use Canvas to foster a collaborative learning culture by building interpersonal relationships with teachers and designing opportunities and sustainable structures for teachers to effectively collaborate to improve student learning.

  • Since there are 6 courses, and each course runs for 6 weeks, it will take a participant a total of 36 weeks to become Canvas Certified
  • We estimate each CORE course takes about 10 hours to complete
    • Most participants spend about 2-3 hours per week during the four weeks of the content in the CORE courses
  • We estimate each ELECTIVE course takes about 7 hours to complete
  • Although there are due dates, they are flexible. They are meant to serve as guideposts throughout the six weeks
  • We understand that life happens, and our facilitators are available for questions and concerns
  • We work with participants who need extensions or who need to pause their enrollments

Cohort-based community of learners

Engaging facilitators

Badges and Micro-credentials

Project-based, not seat time (or tests)

We love Canvas, but we didn't want to just show you the features of Canvas in isolation. We wanted to showcase the connection between Canvas and teaching and learning best practices. So these courses contain a combination of information about research-based best practices and strategies for using Canvas to its fullest potential.

Need more Canvas Basics first? We have a free course for that. Check it out here: Canvas Basics

Upmost in our minds when creating the program was - how will participants be able to apply this content? The application in our participants' learning environments is key -- all of the assessment pieces in the CCE program ask participants to create something they will use in their own teaching and learning environments. There is no seat-time requirement, and there are no tests.

Our program is cohort based, and we value and leverage the relationships made among the peers as they progress through the courses.

Upon enrollment into the program, participants are also enrolled in a Resource Center course for their program - either K12 or Higher Ed. This allows for broader community connections outside of the cohorts.

We also encourage participants to share on Twitter, which they frequently do! In July 2021 we asked participants to share their why about joining the Canvas Certified Educator program with the #CCEinProgress on Twitter. The first 20 folks who posted were sent some special sticker swag:

A critical piece of the courses is the facilitator for communication, engagement, and feedback. All of the CCE facilitators are educators and Instructure employees who have been through the CCE program. They represent educators in K12 and HE from all over the United States.

Badges: Upon successful completion of each course, participants earn that course's badge through Badgr. At the conclusion of the entire program, participants receive the designation of Canvas Certified Educator. along with the final CCE badge. The badge and certification are valid for 2 years. If a participant wishes to re-certify in future years, they will be able to do so by taking 2 new elective courses.

Digital Promise Micro-credentials: We are proud to partner with Digital Promise to give our CCE participants the opportunity to earn a Digital Promise Micro-credential for each of the CCE courses. This is an optional part of the CCE program, and gives our participants an additional way to show what they have learned. Each course is aligned to one of Digital Promise's Micro-credentials. We provide a template in each course if participants decide they want to apply for the micro-credential in addition to the badge the course awards. We also provide a coupon for participants for those micro-credentials that have a fee, so there is not cost to the CCE participants.

"I appreciate the hands-on approach in having us apply what we have learned in our own courses. After all, we learn more by doing. I also appreciated the variety of positions of my peers. It was wonderful learning about how they use Canvas. I got some great ideas from them! Very well done..."

“This course is making me engage in the Canvas platform in ways that I was not aware of, but it is showing me how it can be a very useful platform for providing content to participants virtually.”

"It was refreshing to have time to focus on professional growth and put it immediately into action."

"This is probably the most meaningful professional learning I have taken. I like the way the course is designed as a series instead of a one-time learning experience. I also like that we have to apply what we are learning. There are many opportunities for reflection. The tasks are appropriately challenging. The content in the course is above par and is 100% aligned with the strategic plan for our school system. I wish I could have every teacher in my system complete this course."

"The CORE 2 course encouraged me to use Canvas features in a unique way. Increasing student participation, progression, and motivation is an ongoing challenge for me. CORE 2 helped get my lessons pointed in a fresh direction!"

I like that this workshop is asking me to think about using Canvas tools in a new way. I feel like I’m thinking about new ways of approaching more personalized learning instead of how to fit more traditional classroom teaching into Canvas.

I am continually stepping outside my comfort level in this course and learning so much. The resources are amazing and I will continue to reference these resources when I am out of the class.
