Making Forests More Valuable(Lesson 49)
Sustainable forests are created when people plant enough trees to replace the ones that have been cut down.
Unfortunately, less than 10% of forests across the world gets managed like this. The rising need for food and fuel makes it more likely that more forests will be cleared to grow crops.

Sustainable forests
Saving forests should be a global initiative.
Even countries without forests can help to save forests.
- Encourage people to buy and protect trees
- plant trees on land that is not suitable for growing crops
- Prevent illegal logging and poaching by outsiders
The following things can be done by governments and charities to save forests:
- Export rainforest products like fruit and nuts
- Provide local employment by tourists visiting forests
These workers need to cut down trees and plant new trees. They can get money from tourists and use that for material.
Reducing the demand for resources and energy can also help saving forests. Wealthy countries must use fewer resources by reusing products, limiting population growth, recycling materials, using energy more efficiently and making farm more efficient so less land is needed for crops.
A lot of people can be employed when a forest is sustainable.
In the video below, learn about how we can limit deforestation!
