G-Go

Introducing

"I wanted to use translation earbuds to understand English speakers better. It helped, but it did not seem to improve my English."

The Problem

James Suter(Student)

English is the number one speaking language in the world, effective English learning has always been an issue for non-English speakers. Although there are many language teaching apps, online courses, and face-to-face classes, most of English learners usually feel frustrated with their slow progression. Furthermore, due to the covid pandemic, many English learning courses have shifted online, which further separates the learner from the natural contexts. The majority of English courses do not address the personal needs of the learners, and the self-learning apps showed some success, but they are either too repetitive or very limited in content. It is simply not feasible anymore to carry dictionaries around or study the language from books while the learners are required to communicate effectively using English on a daily basis. Translation earbuds once seemed like a quick-fix and a tool of survival. However, their efficiency as teaching tools is widely questionable. YouTube self-learning videos gained popularity, but they still lack interactivity and authentic exposure. Moreover, because English learners cannot always detect their own mistakes, fossilized errors form as professional feedback is not always available. So far, there have not been successful attempts to create an effective learning tool to provide valuable in-depth feedback on speaking skills.

Say goodbye to undifferentiated English learning courses and long hours of unnecessary assignments. These smart earbuds encourage self-directed learning by integrating advanced AI technology to intelligently and accurately identify your speech errors and provide continuous feedback on what you say or hear. Our remastered app highlights your semantical and syntactical challenges and assists you with the best options for correction and language growth. G-Go is designed to provide a super convenient service that is highly personalized and practically contextualized. This technology uses the natural approach of everyday language exposure to render opportunities to learn from experience on the go. No need for more English group classes or cost private tutoring, this educational tool is your new learning pal.

In 2021, our development team in Grammarly collaborated with Samsung to created high-quality earbuds that have the potential to change language learning dramatically, and, Grammarly Go came to light.

"I can now identify my speaking weaknesses and fix my pronunciation mistakes. I feel more confident about expressing myself in front of native speakers."

How G-Go Works

the market in graphs

  • Meticulous Research reports in 2020 showed that the English language learning market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.9% from 2019 to reach $49.93 billion by 2027.
  • Due to the lockdown and closure of all educational institutions, online learning and Self-Directed Learning have burgeoned since 2019. Realizing the opportunity, most online tutoring apps and ESL learning platforms have developed their software to ride the wave. Moreover, the government is also taking initiatives for the growth of the education sector, especially in Asia Pacific countries. The growing accessibility of the Internet, rising numbers of mobile phone users, and release of SDL English learning mobile apps by the key companies are leading the shift to online learning.
  • Other statistics indicate a growing global tendency towards connected wearable devices worldwide with numbers reaching 929 million by 2021, showing a dramatic climb of over 185% from 2016 rates. This is paving the way for educational ventures in the field of wearables and software. English learning apps and digital tools are becoming more and more popular, and a particular trend affecting this market is the integration of Artificial Intelligence and adaptive chatbots.
  • In 2020 there were over 1.1 million international students in the USA and 550.000 in Canada struggle with ESL in academic and non-academic contexts. In addition, dozens of thousands of refugees are displaced to English-speaking countries every year. These refugees feel isolated and insecure due to the language barrier they face in their new homes.
  • There have been some ventures in educational wearables since 2010. Google Glass was one attempt to provide educational opportunities in 2013, but it failed to go beyond the prototype phase and went discontinued. In addition, VR and AR gadgets have made notable progress in the field, but they are still inconvenient for outdoor use.

OPPOTUNITIES and FORECAST

THe market

" I have been using G-Go for six weeks, and I am happy with the results. I love that I am learning from my personal experiences."

Pedro Santos(Int. student)

  • Since our product operates ideally in authentic contexts, it is estimated that 75% of our clients will be located in English-speaking countries as a first language, such as Canada, the USA, UK, and Australia. The end-users in those countries are our top priority at this phase as they are in direct contact with English on a daily basis.
  • Our targeted age group is mainly teens and adults who finished their K12 education (18+ years), but other social groups can benefit from the various features of G-Go, potentially international students, new immigrants, refugees, and travellers. There is a need for G-Go in vocational environments where professionals are hired for their expertise, and they struggle with language challenges.
  • In March 2021, a number of 35 samples have been given away in Canada for beta testing and organic feedback to further develop the product before mass production. The selected sample users were in as follows: 10 new immigrants/refugees of seven different first languages, 15 international students, and 10 foreign professionals. The feedback was positive beyond expectations, and the survey showed that 98% of users rated G-Go with 5 stars.
  • With sufficient funding, we plan to launch our final product in the market by early 2022. The app will be operated on IOS and Android devices.
  • Our developing team has already started working on versions that support four other popular languages: French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. The approximate release date is 2023. This step will globalize our product to cover a wider range of users across the world.

Weaknesses

Dealing with this particular assignment, I had mixed the oughts regarding the boundaries of the venture and how successfully the product can be manifested in the market. At first I was not sure about where to start, so I thought I could combine my field experience and the need gaps I have witnessed through my professional journey with what I have learned about the prospects of AI technology. So, G-Go was incepted based on need and opportunity rather than existing inspiring models. My main challenge was that I have no entrepreneurial experience and I have never been an investor but rather an instructor. Perhaps that lacking side of my life triggered the desire to open the window and envision the project more vividly. Another point worth mentioning is that I tried to tailor the content and presentation to appeal to companies as an investment opportunity more than an end-user product. As for the elevator pitch, I was looking for something brief, catchy, and fancy. However, I thought that the potential investor must see how the product works beyond words, so I had to render another video on "how it works"to help visualize the product in motion. Moreover, the forecasting revenue was another issue I had to stop at. Given that my background in business is not strong enough, I had to actually work on the financial feasibility of the product. The aim was to decide on a price and a plan that can be affordable to the masses while generating a considerable profit for the investor. Additionally, the lack of direct competitors in the market made it challenging for me to make a comparative analysis or exceed existing standards. In fact, although I am not sure if the current state of AI technology can support such a scheme, I am seriously considering taking this project to the next step and share my idea with Grammarly. The following notes are based on my perspective and the feedback I received from my peers:
